One Year Intensive Program - Cinematography (CZVF230002)

Goal description

An intensive hands-on experience based on a mentor workshop where each student gets to operate and work with diverse cameras, formats and technologies for filmmaking as a cinematographer. While at the same time developing artistic and aesthetic criteria and styles. Each student will be cinematographer for 3 different film projects directed by students of OYIP-Directing and OYIP-Documentary students: 1) One 3 minutes silent narrative film (16mm) 2) One 12 minutes documentary short (digital) 3) One 10 minutes fiction short film (16mm). Each student will be cinematographer and director of one 5-minute narrative film on 35mm. The process is supported and completed with a set of mandatory theoretical courses and a range of electives courses.

Learning outcomes

One Year Intensive Program - Cinematography (OYIP-C) graduates are technically, artistically and narratively equipped to assume the duty of Director of Photography on a short film project, whether this would be a fiction or nonfiction one.

OYIP-C alumni possess sufficient knowledge on key aspects of the cinematographic craft such as: exponometry, optics, light, film stock sensitivity and behavior, digital technologies.

OYIP-C alumni are fully capable of performing a visual/cinematic analysis of a screenplay and further engage in a fruitful collaboration with a director and other heads of departments like scenographers, costume director, gaffer etc.

OYIP-C alumni understand the different types of lighting, what roles they can fulfill and be able to light scenes and use that knowledge both from technical and artistic point of view (both interiors and exteriors).

OYIP-C alumni are able to create an equipment list during pre-production that balances the project budget with the creative and technical needs.

OYIP-C alumni can provide insight for creating a realistic shooting schedule during pre-production, from the camera department point of view.

OYIP-C alumni are experienced with Super 16mm and 35mm film shooting. They can operate different camera bodies handling these formats and ensure correct and high-quality results in terms of exposure, color, and other parameters inherent to the film stock.

OYIP-C alumni are well trained to work professionally in positions like 1st and 2nd Assistant Camera or Lighting Technician.

OYIP-C alumni are sufficiently familiar with post production workflows both for film and digital projects and have knowledge of the color grading process.

Candidate's prerequisites

A maximum of 6 students per mentor workshop is accepted.

The OYIP-C is aimed at students who have at least finished high school education and have gained a minimum of practical experience in the camera department in films or in still photography. It is a very well-suited program for those who want to get an intensive and hands-on experience in the camera operation and directing of photography for films, which would allow them to be accepted for higher education degrees (Bachelor's, Master's) on Cinematography and Filmmaking.

Directing mentors carefully evaluate the applications from all prospect students and make admission decisions based on the quality of those materials, with an approximate minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 6 students per each mentor workshop.

Conditions for completing

For completion of the course students must: 1) Execute and complete the collaboration with OYIP-Directing students and OYIP-Documentary students within the time defined by the study plan. 2) Execute and complete the final 35mm film within the time defined by the study plan. 3) Attend and pass all mandatory theory classes. 4) Accumulate a minimum of 60 ECTS credits by required and optional subjects
