The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the work of contemporary Czech animated film directors, their backgrounds and original directorial approaches.

During the semester, students will meet with animation professionals who will introduce their work, provide them with details of the process of creation and production of their films, present their backgrounds and directorial approaches. Among the teachers will be authors of short and feature-length animated films, authors of series and comics. Students will learn about the different approaches to filmmaking and the different technologies in which the teachers create.

The class will include screenings of excerpts from the presenter's films, examples of film preparation, artwork, storyboards, etc. The teacher will analyze his/her films and work in detail, pointing out hilarious and questionable moments, and letting the audience get a glimpse into his/her filmmaking mindset and his/her own technical processes. The lecture foresees an active discussion with the audience.

Some speakers will give two lectures in a row. In this case, they will assign simple exercises for the students to discuss with them in the following lecture.

Guest lecturers are directors of contemporary animated film in the ZS: Michaela Pavlátová, Kateřina Karhánková, Libor Pixa, Michaela Hoffová, etc.

Learning outcomes

Personal acquaintance with the authors of contemporary Czech animation and their films, insight into the different directorial approaches of each teacher.

Interest in animation (no knowledge of animation required).
