Composition: Individual Course, Two Semesters (CZVH120009)

Popis a cíle

The Composition individual course focuses on developing creative individuality, innovating means of expression, and improving technical proficiency. In parallel with work on their own compositions, students are exposed to current trends and movements through analyses of works by leading international composers. Theoretical knowledge is integrated with artistic practice, and students develop the ability to independently apply theoretical knowledge when reflecting on musical composition and various aspects of creative work.

The course is intended for those interested in developing artistic skills in the field of composition without the need to provide proof of prior formal education in the field, provided they possess sufficient technical proficiency, primarily for the development of a distinctive artistic expression or preparation for future study in the field within an accredited program.

The course consists of participation in individual lessons tailored to the participant’s level, skills, and focus, comprising a minimum of 26 lessons per semester (1 lesson = 45 min) with a selected instructor from the Department of Composition. Individual lessons may be supplemented with additional activities based on the decision of the program coordinator and subject to time and capacity constraints.

Výsledky učení

Participants further develop their composition thinking in accordance with their previous level of achievement and aesthetic orientation. They are able to articulate their own musical ideas more effectively in both musical notation and sound, in a form that is clear and comprehensible to performers. They are able to engage in professional discourse and to formulate and communicate aesthetic as well as theoretical and compositional reflections, both orally and in writing. 

Specific knowledge:

Participants develop the ability to work independently as composers, and their artistic output acquires distinctive and stylistically individual characteristics. They are able to use modern technologies creatively and independently, including audio editing software, and to produce scores that are professionally notated and stylistically appropriate. They further develop the ability to collaborate in a team and to take the initiative in doing so. 

General Competencies:

Participants develop the ability to work and prepare independently. They demonstrate self-motivation and self-discipline, including the ability to study on their own in preparation for ongoing future education with a view to a sustainable professional career. They use a range technological tools in their own musical work and employ them to promote their professional profile. They further develop the ability to use contemporary digital technologies for professional communication and presentation. 

Předpoklady uchazeče

The course is designed for those interested in developing their artistic skills without the need to provide proof of prior formal education in the field. Participants are expected to have an interest in the performing arts, an openness to creative work, and a level of technical preparation appropriate to the nature of the instruction. Playing a musical instrument is an advantage.

Registration for the course is done electronically via email to international@hamu.cz. There is no fee for submitting the application.

The application must include:

• A completed application form

• A CV

• A motivation letter

• Composition portfolio from the past 3 years

• At least 3 samples of your own work in digital format: scores (.pdf) and, if available, audio samples in .mp3 or .wav format

• Photographs (optional)

The admissions process involves an evaluation of the submitted materials.

At the discretion of the course guarantor, the admissions process may be supplemented by a short interview or a practical assessment (online or in person, subject to prior agreement with the applicant).

A prerequisite for admission is that the applicant be at least 18 years of age at the time of starting the course.

A prerequisite for admission is a minimum language proficiency level of B1 (pre-intermediate to intermediate) in the language of instruction. Language proficiency may be verified through an entrance interview (online or in person) at the discretion of the course guarantor.

The program’s capacity is limited due to the nature of the practical instruction. The minimum number of participants required to open the program is determined based on the department’s organizational capability of the given semester.

The binding and valid course fee is set in CZK and includes VAT. Bank fees, including fees for foreign currency transfers, are paid by the attendee (paying party).

Podmínky absolování

Successful completion of the program requires active participation in classes and engagement in practical exercises and creative assignments throughout the semester. The recommended minimum attendance rate is 75%.

Emphasis is placed on individual progress, creative engagement, and the ability to apply acquired skills in practice.

The practical course concludes with a certificate of completion of the practical course as part of the lifelong learning program. This certificate does not replace a diploma from any form of higher education or university studies, nor does it confer any degree in education.
