FAMU International Directing Fiction One Year Intensive Program is a very interactive, one-year program for aspiring filmmakers. Designed to completely immerse students in the art of storytelling, the program addresses the technical and artistic aspects of directing in hands-on, real-world applications. Students will collaborate with their peers in various positions on skills that are vital and go beyond film theory. The course is all about evolving raw concepts into completely shot short films (on film and digital), individualised mentoring by seasoned professors who guide them every step of the way from pre-production all the way to final cut. Each student will direct a number of projects (up to 4) leading up to a final film that reflects their own unique personal creative voice. Industry masterclasses and workshops add to the education of the challenges of directing, allowing students to hone their craft. By the end of the One Year Intensive Program in Prague, students will have a professional portfolio of work, preparing them to enter the film industry or major institutions. This practical, collaborative experience builds confidence, technical skills, and the artistic vision needed for a successful career in film direction.

Popis a cíle
An intensive hands-on experience based on mentor workshop where each students conceive, develop and direct, in an individual manner, three different film projects:
1) One 3 minutes silent narrative film (16mm)
2) One 12 minutes documentary short (digital) and
3) One 10 minutes fiction short film (16mm).
The process is supported and completed with a set of mandatory theoretical courses and a range of electives courses.

The One Year Intensive Program - Directing Fiction (OYIP-D) alumni are equipped with significant experience in the craft of writing, preparing and directing both fiction and non-fiction short films.
The graduate can write and develop story ideas into functional and compelling fiction screenplays that adapt for realistic and pragmatical limitations such as time, budget, crew size, etc. They can also co-write in collaboration with screenwriters.
Alumni are well experienced in preparing for and doing a public director’s pitch of their project.
The graduate can assume with proficiency the preparatory task of a director: dramaturgy, script breakdown, casting & rehearsals, location scouting, storyboarding & visual narrative and sound aesthetics.
Equally, they can perform as directors on set by directing actors, blocking scenes in collaboration with a DOP and by communicating properly with and managing a small sized crew (10 to 20 persons).
At the same time, an APP directing graduate is fully capable of doing a subject and thematic research to conceive and develop a non-fiction short film. And further on to prepare and create the conditions to actually shoot such a project and to develop an artistic expression.
The OYIP-D alumni have essential understanding and on-hands experience with both film stock and digital filmmaking. Thus he/she can make artistic and narrative decisions according to the features, limitations and capacities of each of those formats.
The graduate has sufficient understanding of a full postproduction workflow -both for film and digital- and can cooperate with editors, sound editors and designers, colorists and postproduction supervisors.
Throughout the whole process She/he can establish a fruitful collaboration with a production team and accommodate the concrete limitations of the project.
Lastly, the OYIP-D alumni have ample skills to navigate a film project successfully by keeping command of it and having a directorial approach of visuals, concept and acting style. Thus, guaranteeing a result well balanced in theme, aesthetics and narrative.
Předpoklady uchazeče
A maximum of 6 students per mentor workshop is accepted.
The OYIP-D is aimed at students who have at least finished high school education and have gained a minimum of practical experience in directing films. It is a very well-suited program for those who want to get an intensive and hands-on experience in the conception and crafting of films, which would allow them to be accepted for higher education degrees (Bachelor's, Master's) in Filmmaking.
Directing mentors carefully evaluate the applications from all prospect students and make admission decisions based on the quality of those materials, with an approximate minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 6 students per each mentor workshop.

For completion of the course students must:
1) Execute and complete all three film projects in the mentor workshop within the time defined by the study plan.
2) Attend and pass all mandatory theory classes.
3) Accumulate a minimum of 60 ECTS credits by required and optional subjects
